Человек призвал Азифа Мустафаев, имеет 31 лет, художник, и, благодаря схожести с 44-го президента США, стал одним из туристических центров в его родном районе Gabal.

El presidente de EEUU, Barack Obama, tiene un doble que vive en Azerbaiyán, informó hoy la agencia noticiosa Anspress.

El hombre se llama Asif Mustafayev, tiene 31 años, es pintor y, gracias a la similitud con el 44º mandatario de EEUU, se ha convertido en una atracción turística en su distrito natal de Gabala.

A menudo se ve obligado a posar ante las cámaras en compañía de paisanos o curiosos que vienen de aldeas y ciudades vecinas.

Debido a su piel trigueña se le pegó desde la infancia el apodo de "garabala", es decir, "moreno", pero últimamente, después de las elecciones presidenciales en EEUU, todo el mundo le llama Obama.

Asif se siente halagado y hasta ha cambiado la blusa de pintor por un traje, para resaltar su parecido al actual líder de EEUU.

El doble azerbaiyano de Obama se interesa ahora por la política mundial y ha contado a los reporteros venidos desde Bakú que le gustaría entrevistarse con el presidente de EEUU para contarle sobre Azerbaiyán y sobre el contencioso territorial de Alto Karabaj.

Obama look-alike becomes celebrity

Asif Mustafayev, an artist in northwestern Azerbaijan, has become a celebrity in the ex-Soviet Caucasus state for bearing a striking resemblance to US President Barack Obama.

The 31-year-old with tanned skin and curly hair is called 'our Obama' by his fellow villagers, who often drop into his place with their guests to show off the local look-alike of the world’s No 1 leader, Russian daily Vremya Novostei has reported.

Mustafayev earns his living by painting advertising hoardings, decorating schools and sprucing up the tourist centres that abound in the picturesque mountainous area, but has now often to leave his workshop to pose for a picture with fellow villagers and visitors, the paper said.

He does not seem to mind his neighbours’ frequent intrusions and invitations like "Hey, Obama, let’s have tea and a heart-to-heart chat."

Asif enjoys his new popularity and has even changed his artist’s smock for a decent suit, the paper said. He has grown more interested in politics since his resemblance with Obama was noticed by village elders, who keep up to date with world news, the paper reported.

In an interview with an Azerbaijani television channel, Asif said he dreamt of meeting Obama one day to tell him about Azerbaijan and his view of its dispute with Armenia over Nagorny Karabakh.

Mustafayev’s village is in the Gabala region, which hosts a Russian anti-missile radar monitoring the Middle East. The radar could become a point of contention between Moscow and Washington as Russia’s lease agreement expires in 2012.

Un dúo formado por la bielorrusa Tatiana Puchek y la rusa Ekaterina Makarova será el primero en probar en el torneo de tenis de Indian Wells las fuerzas de María Sharapova, a quien una lesión en el hombro obligó a dejar en agosto de 2008 las canchas y someterse a una operación a finales del año.


Acompañada por otra tenista rusa, Elena Vesnina, Sharapova va a participar en Indian Wells en la modalidad de dobles, categoría en la que no juega desde mediados de 2005 aunque tiene en su haber tres títulos de la WTA: uno, conquistado en Birmingham, en 2004, en compañía de la rusa María Kirilenko, y otros dos, en los torneos de Tokio y Luxemburgo, en 2003, junto con la tailandesa Tamarine Tanasugarn.

GUATEMALA CITY, Central America (Reuters) - Archeologists have uncovered carved stucco panels depicting cosmic monsters, gods and serpents in Guatemala's northern jungle that are the oldest known depictions of a famous Mayan creation myth.

CIUDAD DE LA GUATEMALA, Centroamérica (Reuters) - Los Arqueólogos han destapado paneles de estuco tallados que representan monstruos cósmicos, dioses y serpientes en la selva del norte de Guatemala que son las pinturas conocidas más antiguas de un famoso mito sobre la creación Maya.

The newly discovered panels, both 26 feet long and stacked on top of each other, were created around 300 BC and show scenes from the core Mayan mythology, the Popol Vuh.

It took investigators three months to uncover the carvings while excavating El Mirador, the biggest ancient Mayan city in the world, the site's head researcher, Richard Hansen, said on Wednesday.

The Maya built soaring temples and elaborate palaces in Central America and southern Mexico, dominating the region for some 2,000 years, before mysteriously abandoning their cities around 900 AD.

The El Mirador basin was deserted much earlier with the large urban population leaving a complex network of roads and waterways and a massive pyramid now covered under thick vegetation.

The earliest written version of the Popol Vuh was discovered in the early 1700s by a Spanish colonial priest and the panels are the first known sculptural depictions of the main characters in the myth -- two hero twins, Hansen said.

"This is pre-Christian, it has tremendous antiquity and shows again the remarkable resilience of an ideology that's existed for thousands of years," Hansen, an Idaho State University archeologist who has worked at El Mirador for over a decade, said.

On one panel, the twins are depicted surrounded by cosmic monsters and above them is a bird deity with outstretched wings.

On the other, there is a Mayan corn god framed by an undulating serpent, said Hansen who worked as a consultant for Mel Gibson's 2006 movie about the Maya, "Apocalypto." Continued...
