BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In its 2008-2009 season finale, Indiana University Ballet Theater presents "Variations on a Russian Theme," with an updated version of the classical ballet Swan Lake and a world premiere by Matthew Neenan, March 27 and 28 at the Musical Arts Center.

The new version of the time-honored Swan Lake, composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, has been staged by guest ballerina and choreographer Cynthia Gregory and IU Ballet Department Chair Michael Vernon.

While including all of the classic ballet's major sections -- the famous waltzes, the White Swan pas de deux and the Black Swan pas de deux (representing dual sides of the principal characters) and the original corps de ballet dances that make Swan Lake so unique -- the piece will last about half the length of a normal production.

Asteroid 2009 DD45 Misses Earth

A small asteroid, designated 2009 DD45, passed the Earth at a distance of 46,000 miles, a near miss in terms of cosmic distances.

Though asteroid 2009 DD45 was just about two hundred feet long, it might have impacted with the force of a nuclear blast.Astronomers are comparing asteroid 2009 DD45 to the rock that caused the Tunguska impact of 1908.

The 1908 impact occurred in Siberia near the Tunguska River and destroyed the taiga forest at a distance of twenty five kilometers around the epicenter.

The Tunguska impact, which was technically an air burst explosion rather than a ground collision, had the force of a multi-megaton nuclear blast.

Had asteroid 2009 DD45 hit a populated area, such as a large city, it would have laid it waste.

Had asteroid 2009 DD45 hit the ocean it would have caused a tsunami that would have devastated coastlines.

Astronomers suggest that asteroid 2009 DD45 is now in a solar orbit that intersects the Earth's orbit. That means that asteroid 2009 DD45 will be visiting the vicinity of Earth again.

The space rock was discovered only two days ago

The near miss of 2009 DD45, which was detected just two or so days before it passed the Earth, illustrates the continuing danger that the Earth faces due to asteroid impacts.

Asteroid 2009 DD45 suggests that not only greater efforts should be made to detect and track such asteroids before they become a threat, but strategies should be put into place to divert them should they be found to be on a collision course.

Yucatan peninsula, Mexico

An asteroid 2.5 to 6 miles in length impacted the Earth near Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, 65 million years ago. The Yucatan impact threw up unimaginable amounts of water vapor, dust, and other debris, blotting out the sun for years. It is thought to have rendered most life on Earth, including the dinosaurs, extinct.

A similar impact in current times would certainly end human civilization and likely the human species.The idea of an asteroid hitting the Earth has been popularized in fiction and in cinema, including the 1998 films Armageddon and Deep Impact.

Another film along those lines, When Worlds Collide, a remake of a 1950s film based on a 1933 novel, is under development.

Meta Carta / News maps

MetaCarta
A Cambridge, Mass.-based company is launching a free Web site that maps news articles to their location on a map.

MetaCarta indexes more than 1,400 sources, including stories from the Associated Press, Reuters, and other news sites and blogs.

You can search for a place name or zoom into the map to a specific location, and articles related to that spot will be displayed. Repositioning the map refines the search. You can also browse by category, such as health, politics, sports, and world news.

The AP and Reuters stories are displayed in a window on the site, while clicking on other items sends you to the source site.

There are no ads right now, but eventually there may be classified listings and ads associated with businesses, says Rick Hutton, vice president of content at MetaCarta

Otro juguetito realizado con Google Maps, en el que en esta ocasión nos geolocaliza las noticias que obtiene de más de 1400 fuentes, entre las que se incluyen noticias de Associated press, Reuters, además de otros sitios e incluso blogs.
Este juguetito se llama MetaCarta y está compuesto por dos paneles, el derecho nos muestra los titulares y nos permite seleccionar las categorías de las noticias a mostrar, y el izquierdo tenemos el mapa, y además se irán cargando otro tipo de contenidos conforme indiquemos, accesibles a través de sus pestañas.
Como dijimos antes, nos geolocaliza las noticias alrededor del mapa, de manera que podemos ir moviéndonos por el mismo, o incluso buscar una zona específica, para que podamos acceder a todas esas noticias que se hayan registrado dentro del área que estamos viendo en el mapa.
Además, podemos filtrar las noticias por categorías, como las historias más destacadas, temas de salud, negocios, política, o noticias mundiales, entre otros.
Al menos si nos interesa una noticia, siempre podemos cliquear encima del titular y nos traerá la información original a través del panel derecho, donde dispondremos de las pestañas pertenecientes al mapa y a cada una de las noticias que hayamos cargado. Además, podemos replegar el panel izquierdo para una mejor comodidad a la hora de acceder a los contenidos.
¿Lo malo? Pues que no se autoactualiza los titulares de las noticias conforme nos vayamos moviendo por el mapa. Además, la interacción con la interface de usuario es algo lenta.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano gave the symbolic keys of the Russian Orthodox podvorie in Bari, Italy, to President Dmitri Medvedev at an official ceremony of handing the church to Russia on Sunday at the Hall of St Nikolai on the podvorie grounds.

Both Mrs Medvedeva and Signora Napolitano, the wives of the presidents, also participated in the ceremonies.

The Italian government decided to transfer the shrine-church of St Nicholas and its related property in Bari to Russian ownership during then-President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Italy in March 2007.

The Italian government completed the internal procedures on passing the church to Russia without compensation in April 2008, and the deed of conveyance was signed in Rome on 13 November 2008. Vladimir Kozhin, an assistant to President Medvedev for property matters, signed the document on the Russian side.

The religious centre has an an area of 8,000 square metres (@2 acres), and it was established at the initiative of Grand Princess Yelizaveta Fyodorovna of Russia to accommodate Russian pilgrims coming to Bari to venerate the relics of St Nicholas.

It was built to the design of Russian architect Aleksei Shchusev with donations from believers, including Tsar Nikolai II, in 1913-17. Work was not completed because of World War I and the events surrounding the Russian Revolution.

Russian émigrés who were members of the Russian Palestinian Society passed all of the church buildings to the municipality of Bari in 1937, because they lacked the funds to maintain the church in a proper and fit condition.

Bari municipal authorities gave some of the church buildings back to Russia in late 1990s, including the upper church and some of the living quarters; however, the complex remained in the ownership of the municipality.

Archpriest Vladimir Kuchumov, the former rector of the shrine-church dedicated to St Nicholas, said it was a “historic” event, for Italy is handing over property to its original owner. He pointed out the fact that the compound is a UNESCO-registered monument.
