GUATEMALA CITY, Central America (Reuters) - Archeologists have uncovered carved stucco panels depicting cosmic monsters, gods and serpents in Guatemala's northern jungle that are the oldest known depictions of a famous Mayan creation myth.

The newly discovered panels, both 26 feet long and stacked on top of each other, were created around 300 BC and show scenes from the core Mayan mythology, the Popol Vuh.

It took investigators three months to uncover the carvings while excavating El Mirador, the biggest ancient Mayan city in the world, the site's head researcher, Richard Hansen, said on Wednesday.

The Maya built soaring temples and elaborate palaces in Central America and southern Mexico, dominating the region for some 2,000 years, before mysteriously abandoning their cities around 900 AD.

The El Mirador basin was deserted much earlier with the large urban population leaving a complex network of roads and waterways and a massive pyramid now covered under thick vegetation.

The earliest written version of the Popol Vuh was discovered in the early 1700s by a Spanish colonial priest and the panels are the first known sculptural depictions of the main characters in the myth -- two hero twins, Hansen said.

"This is pre-Christian, it has tremendous antiquity and shows again the remarkable resilience of an ideology that's existed for thousands of years," Hansen, an Idaho State University archeologist who has worked at El Mirador for over a decade, said.

On one panel, the twins are depicted surrounded by cosmic monsters and above them is a bird deity with outstretched wings.

On the other, there is a Mayan corn god framed by an undulating serpent, said Hansen who worked as a consultant for Mel Gibson's 2006 movie about the Maya, "Apocalypto." Continued...

Mexican beauty Salma Hayek found herself "out of the running for every role except prostitutes and maids" when she arrived in the US to forge a career.

Born on September 2, 1966, and raised in a conservative Catholic family by a Mexican opera singer mum and a Lebanese dad in the oil business, Salma was a self-proclaimed "spoiled brat" who dreamed of Hollywood fame while growing up in the town of Coatzacoalcos.

Aged 12 she threatened to fail her classes if she wasn't allowed to go to the US, so her parents sent her to a Catholic school in Texas. After two years, however, her behaviour – including pulling stunts like setting all the nuns' clocks back – got her expelled and she completed her studies in her native Mexico.Salma went on to study political science at the National University of Mexico before deciding to pursue her showbiz goals.

In 1989, her second-ever TV role, playing Teresa in the number one soap opera of the same name, made her a national superstar overnight.

She quit TV to tread the boards, but fans at the sold-out performances – Salma's huge popularity meant producers had to seat people in the aisles – wouldn't let her forget her soap opera past.

"I said I was going back to theatre because it was a more healthy environment," she says. "But people would come to see me and they would bring big cardboards saying, 'I Love You, Teresa'."

"I am lucky to have found that one guy that I really got to make true love with, savouring him, learning the little things about him," she said of the two-time Oscar nominee in 2002. The pair parted company, however, in 2003 and Salma later found love with French businessman, François-Henri Pinault.

Their daughter Valentina Paloma was born on September 20, 2007.Despite the Academy Award buzz around 2002's Frida, which she both starred in and produced and her upcoming directing debut with The Maldonado Miracle, Salma still confronts discrimination.

Darmstadt, Alemania.- La traductora Susanne Lange, especializada en literatura española, fue premiada hoy por la Academia Alemana de la Lengua, por la nueva adaptación al alemán que hizo del Quijote de Miguel de Cervantes.

La Academia destacó la obra de Lange y la nueva versión de "Don Quijote aus der Mancha", porque en su adaptación logra por primera vez "transmitir la diversidad de voces y estilos de la obra maestra de la literatura hispánica".

"Esta traducción es una obra maestra", señaló el jurado de la Academia sobre el trabajo de Lange, quien además se especializó en traducciones de escritores como Fernando del Paso, Luis Cernuda y José Manuel Prieto.

El premio Johann-Heinrich-Voss está dotado con 15.000 euros y será entregado el 24 de mayo en Berlín.

Además del título y la corona de oro y diamantes, Rudióva recibió un premio de 100.000 dólares, un collar de piedras preciosas, un viaje para dos personas a una capital de Europa, y un contrato con una reconocida empresa de cosméticos.

En calidad de la mujer más bella de Rusia, Rudióva representará a su pais en el concurso "Miss Mundo", informó un representante del certámen.

Entre las vencedoras del evento el jurado declaró princesas a Svetlana Stepankovskaya de la región de Krasnodar, y a Koenia Shepilova de la región de Ivanovsk, que en calidad de regalo obtuvieron becas para estudiar en la universidad de su elección, en cualquier parte del mundo.

En Rusia se celebra el Día de la Cosmonáutica, fiesta instituida el 9 de abril de 1962 para conmemorar el primer vuelo espacial tripulado de la historia, protagonizado por Yuri Gagarin el 12 de abril de 1961.

En 1968 la fiesta nacional adquirió el rango internacional y se celebra como el Día Mundial de la Aviación y la Cosmonáutica.

Yuri Gagarin, primer cosmonauta de la Tierra, nació el 9 de marzo de 1934 en la aldea de Klushino, en la provincia de Smolensk, en una familia campesina.

En 1955 se diplomó con mención honorífica en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Saratov y el 10 de octubre del mismo año, en el club aéreo de Saratov. Del 26 de julio al 5 de agosto de 1960 pasó con éxito las pruebas de admisión al primer destacamento de cosmonautas.

El 12 de abril de 1961 Yuri Gagarin realizó el primer vuelo espacial tripulado de la historia en la nave "Vostok". Su viaje al espacio duró una hora y 48 minutos.

"Hay que proporcionar a Rusia el acceso garantizado al espacio cósmico, o sea, el país debe estar en condiciones de efectuar los lanzamientos desde el territorio nacional de cualesquiera vehículos, desde satélites de diversa configuración hasta las naves tripuladas y estaciones interplanetarias".
